LINER ON FIRE.

DISASTER IN PACIFIC. PASSENGERS ALL OFF, SHIP ABANDONED. RESCUE WITHOUT LOSS, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. San Francisco, Oct. 12. The passenger liner City of Honolulu from Honolulu for Loe Angeles, is on fire 500 miles west of Los Ange lee. Wireless messages stated she was lowering her boats and asking for assistance. Her position was 31 degrees N. lat. 131 degrees W. long. Later messages state that all the passengers had been transferred to the lifeboats. It is believed 400 were on board. The liner was formerly the North German Lloyd Friedrich-der-Grosse (10,771 tons), and has latterly been running between Honolulu and San Pedro. The fire proven to be uncontrollable and the ship was completely abandoned. The steamer Enterprise is expected to arrive in the vicinity of the boats at noon. It is also stated that a ship not named was picking up passengers. THE LATEST DETAILS. ALL RESCUED FROM LIFEBOATS. 1 CASES OF HEROISM. SHIP A VERITABLE FURNACE. Received October 13, 8.25 p.m. New York, Oct. 13. Seventy-three passengers and a crew of 145, the entire list on board the City cf Honolulu, were rescued from lifeboats by the freight steamer West Farrallon. According to the latest advises the yacht Cassiana, en route to Honolulu, stood by the burning steamer, aiding in the disembarkment of the life boats. The passengers are mostly residents of San Francieco, Los Angeles and other Californian cities, and they were en route from Honolulu. Commendation is expressed of the bravery of the radio operator, W. H. Bell, who was on his first sea assignment. He remained on board until the flames drove him and Captain Lester off the ship, which was then a veritable furnace. The West Farrallon sent a wireless message to the waiting army transport Thomas, to which the passengers will be transhipped, permitting the West Farrallon to Proceed to her destination. —Aus.-N.Z.
