DECREASE IN THREE GROUPS. STILL 41 PER CENT. ABOVE 1914. In the official monthly Abstract of Statistics just published it is notified, that the index number for the three food groups as at August 15 is 1512, a decrease of 25 points as compared with the previous month’s figure, and an increase of 41.31 per cent, as compared with that of July, 1914. Very few changes in prices have taken place tn the groceries group, a fall of one point being recorded. The fall of 97 points in the dairyproducts group is due to considerable and all round decreases in the prices of butter and eggs; butter having fallen from Id to 2d per pound during the month, and eggs from 6d to Is per dozen. The index number for the meat group has fallen 25 points. The prices of mutton and pork have remained stationary in most towns, the decrease in the index number being due to a fall in the prices of beef joints and cuts in most towns.
