COMMUNITY CLUB.

WORK OF THE LADIES. SUCCESS OF THE SCHEME. There was a large attendance of ths members of the ladies’ committee of the New Plymouth Community Club at the Victoria League Rooms yesterday afternoon, when a review of the activities of the ladies and suggestions for future work were made in a report submitted by Mrs. A. R. Standish, secretary of the committee. Those present were the guests of Mr. C. H. Weston, president of the club, at afternoon tea. Mr. Weston occupies the chair at the meeting. Mrs. Standish’s report stated that the first supper was given on Monday, July 3, when a large muster of cadets took advantage of the hot pies, sandwiches, tea and cocoa provided. Since then the work had gone on steadily every Monday and Wednesday evening, two members of the committee taking turn as hostesses each week, with the assistance of lady helpers invoked by the individual hostesses. Great credit was due to Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Burgess for having made a start with the jumpers, their provision of the first supper frej of charge having given the canteen sufficient funds with which to carry on. Lieut. L. Andrew, V.C., area officer, had stated that, during the short time the club had been in existence, he had noticed a decided improvement in the cadets and territorials The suggestion had been made that something more than supper should be provided in the way of concerts or a debating society, but the club was greatly handicapped for want of a piano. It was decided to agree to the suggestion of the men’s committee that ices and soft ..drinks should be provided during the summer months instead of tea and cocoa, and this will be done from next Monday. The various local musical societies are to bo communicated with, with a view to arranging a few small concerts. An endeavor is also to be made to make the balcony more comfortable until a clubroom is available.

Considerable regret was expressed at the resignation of Mrs. Burgess as president of the committee, owing to ill-health and pressure of other work, and many tributes to her interest in the club were paid l.y those present. Mrs. Standish intimated that she would be away for some weeks, and asked to be relieved of her office. Mrs. C. Waterston was elected president, while Mrs. Le May will take over the duties of secretary. A vote of thanks to Mr. Weston closed the meeting.
