PNEUMONIC INFLUENZA.

CASES IN AUCKLAND. OUTBREAK ON H.M.S. CHATHAM. NO CAUSE FOR ALARM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The district health officer states that on the Chatham there are a few cases of mild influenza. The warship is going to the quarantine anchorage to-morrow morning as a precautionary measure. Since October 1 there have been 15 cases of sickness on board, not all influenza. Three or four cases had pneumonia, and there was one case of pneumonia following influenza. The Mayor (Mr. Gunson) has telegraphed' the Hon. C. J. Parr: “I am concerned at a revival of pneumonic influenza. There are several cases in the city and district, and as they are not notifiable, the health office is not in a position to thoroughly be posted. A more serious position is caused by cases entering port by shipping. I understand there are a number of cases on the Chatham. I earnestly ask you not to allow these cases to land, but to require them to go to Quarantine Island. I would like Dr. FrengleyJio come to Auckland to investigate the position with Dr. Hughes, in whom we have confidence. In view of local cases and other matters reported, together with an outbreak in Australia, I consider it our duty to place the matter before you and assure you of the fullest co-operation. The public should be advised and should realise the position to ensure adequate safeguards and personal care.” Mr. Gunson, in a statement, says there is no need for alarm, but the public should be warned. RETURN OF THE CHATHAM. MILD INFLUENZA OUTBREAK. Wellington, Last Night. In the House to-day, the Minister of Defence said no alarm need be created by the unexpected return to Auckland of H.M.S. Chatham, the change in her movements being due to a mild outbreak of influenza on Board. The Chatham arrives at Auckland this evening.
