SITUATION “ELECTRIC,” PREMIER’S POLICY SPEECH. KEEN INTEREST GROWS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 11, 11.40 p.m. London, Oct. 11. The political situation is electric. It is expected Mr.. Lloyd George’s speech to Lancashire Coalitionists will be a vigorous counter-attack upon critics of the Government’s! Near East policy, particularly the; accusation that the Government sought war. Mr. Austen Chamberlain is expected to deal with home affairs. The Unionist members of Cabinet met at Downing Street this afternoon, Lora Balfour Cancelling a public engagement in order to be present. Sir George Younger also met the Coalition whips and the leading Unionist agents. Some predict that Mr. Lloyd George will resign and leave the Unionists to carry on the Government until the general election, but it is certain Mr. Lloyd George has no intention of retiring from political life.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Oct. 11, 7.25 p.m. London, Oct. 10. The Daily Chronicle predicts a general election at Christmas.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. London, October 10. The Reform Club, Manchester, will give a luncheon to Mr. Lloyd George on Saturday. The Premier is expected to deliver an important speech on home and foreign policy. There is significance in this arranged luncheon for the Prime Minister, for in Manchester the most vigorous efforts were made to bring about a reunion between the Coalition Liberals and the Wee Frees. Mr. Lloyd George is expected to justify his policy, answer his critics, and reply to the recent series oi attacks by Conservatives. Some newspapers think the speech may be something more than an apologia; it may be a manifesto recognising a new situation. Mr. Chamberlain on Friday dealt with the Near East at Birmingham Conservative Club.
