Power, member of Parliament for Quebec South, has started a campaign for the withdrawal of Can. ada from the League of Nations, on the grounds that the Dominion has no common interest in the league and by retaining membership will only become involved in difficulties. AFGHANISTAN PEACEFUL. . Delhi, October 10. Reports from Afghanistan state that everything is peaceful and that great progress is being made with reforms. FATE OF AV AITORS. New York, October 10. Advices from Rio” de Janeiro state that it is rumoured that the Portuguese avaitors, Cabral and Coutinho, who recently flew from Lisbon to the United States, were assassinated on board the liner Porto, on which they shipped to Portugal on October 4. SEIZURE OF AVHISKY. New York, October 10. *Fifty bottles of whisky were seized on board the United States Shipping Board freighter Winona, which arrived from Smyrna with refugees. This is the first seizure under the new law. The captain denied knowledge of the liquor( and said it must belong to the refugees. TRAM WAGES REDUCED. London, October 10. The tramwaymen’s ballot on the new national wages agreement resulted in 22,436 votes for acceptance . and 10,53'1 against. The agreement entails a reduction of 4s weekly till February.
