Elder, managing director of John Cooke and Company, has returned from a visit to England. As a result of exhaustive enquiries in the meat trade he says the market has been cleared of old stocks of Australian and New Zealand meat, which for so long was the main cause of the severe losses to the trade. The better quality and better dressed meat now being unloaded had also helped to destroy the previous prejudice against Australian meat. In view of these facts, British consumption, which was steadily growing, should materially increase. The most serious competitor was the Argentine, which has a never-failing supply of excellent cattle. The Argentine companies, by their complete and continuous control of the volume of exports, really decreed the fate of the beef trade in the United Kingdom. Australian frozen beef was now of allround better quality than Argentine, yet so much harm had been done to our reputation by the unloading of the old stocks, that prices were generally lower than for Argentine.
