Merniln’s Sister, Water Wings, is spelling. Purser's defeat in the Met. was a win for ‘‘the books." Recent racing has done nothing towards solving the New Zealand Cup problem. Auckland horses will have to travel fast to beat Eruera in the Hunters’ Hurdles to-day. Wonder can Income land the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie? Uncle‘Ned may be "hard." Matinee and Dancing Doll can go fast for six furlongs, and Amiform is good over a mile. On Avondale form Lucius is well treated with 7.7 in the Chatham Handicap. Irapuka will carry Taranaki coin. Bathos is not engaged in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham, and Homage may be one of the hardest to beat.. All Aboard, a hurdle winner at Randwick, is a New Zealand-bred horse owned by Mr. E. J. Watt. Owing to a family bereavement Mr. Watt's horses are at present racing in the colors of Mr. W. Brunton. The Champion Plate promises to bring together at the start of a mile and a quarter such horses as Gloaming, Amythas, Winning Hit, The Hawk, and Thespian. They won’t be together at the. finish if Gloaming is produced. Christmas Rose (Imp.), the dam of Irish Briar. Rose Wreath and Bonnie Rose, recently foa/jd a filly to the imported horse Paper Money. Another interesting Elderslie foaling is that of Aral-te-Uru, who dropped a filly to the imported Tractor. Aral-te-Uru has given the turf many good horses, including Taringamutu. Kilboyne, Kilrea, Killala, and Murlhlku. Dividends • both large and small were returned at Hastings this week. Needless to say. Bathos and King’s Trumpeter only returned "beer money.” Cold Steel’s dividend was fairly good, and was enjoyed by a big crowd of Taranaki sports. Roval Box Is said to be pleasing his trainer, and his New Zealand Cup preparation is reported to be progressing most satisfactorily. The chestnut’s form at forthcoming meetings will bo watched with Interest. Lady HUI was not started at Avondale. Her efforts in Taranaki and elsewhere evidently knocked her out, and a short respite was considered necessary. Lady Hill is in work again at Ellerslie. The hand of Death—early this week—touched a. fine sportsman in the person of Mr. Michael Foley, who was well known to "old timers” in Taranaki and down the coast. The late Mr. Foley was a native of Auckland, and in his youth excelled at cricket, football and tennis, besides being a first-class runner. He subsequently settled in Patea, where racing

took his fancy, and won races with the hurdler Orange Lightning. He originated the Opunake Racing Club, and was actively connected with racing in Wanganui, where his colors were carried with success by Cyclone, Watarawa, and others. On his return to Auckland he helped to establish the Avondale Jockey Club, of which he was president at the time of his death.

"Short weight” was the cause of another horse, Sweet Memory, being disqualified this week, and under present rules the trouble is likely, to occur frequently. Until the Racing Conference amended the rule at its last sitting, jockeys were allowed 1% 16 in a flat race and in a jumping event, upon weighing in, the allowance being made to cover loss by natural causes, or by loss of skull cap or other gear. Now no allowance whatever Is made, and one member of the conference recently Informed the writer that he and several of his confreres on that body already saw the error they had made. The reason that the allowance was cut out was because the old rules were alleged to have been abused, even prominent horse trainers deliberately deducting weight after weighing out, but still keeping within the law. However, it Is certain that some allowance should be made in fairness to all concerned. Waverley weights appeared promptly to time, and appear to be equitably framed. Marqueteur has a good load, 9.11, in the Cup, but may race at Trentham instead, so may be left out of calculations at present. Tame Fox, who won the race last year, has nothing to complain o£ with 9.1, and must be hard to beat. Of the others Irapuka 8.2, Warrawee 7.8, Mark Time 7.6, and E'erle 7.0 appear to have fair prospects. Irapuka is well cared for with 9.9 in the Brewer Handicap, but Awake is not harshly treated with 8.10. Celmisia,. who is only doing the very lightest of tasks, is an unlikely runner. Inah looks nice with 7.11, as do Roman 7.9 and Big Push 7.2. On her recent form Inah appears to be the one meriting most respect. The hurdlers engaged are a very mixed crowd, but Simonides 10.13, Whizz Bang 10.8, antj Trombone 10.2 should go well. Skylight, Pouma, Wapping and Husker are not over-weighted in the minor heats.
