According to a message from North Bay, Ontario, ‘3O lives were lost through a fire which is sweeping Northern Ontario. Five towns have been destroyed and thousands of people are homeless. Received Oct. 6. 8.25 p.m. New York, October 5. The railroads from North Bay are burdened with thousands of refugees from the burning areas in Haileybury. Fifty to one hundred people were drowned when pushed off the dock while attempting to board a rescue boat. Several people were trampled to death and scores were injured when the flames swept the Catholic Church, causing a panic. The whole countryside is reported to be enveloped in dense smoke. The electric lights were turned on at noon in Montreal. According to latest reports, more than 5000 are homeless.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RAIN FALLING. THE DANGER PASSED.
