WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The value of a nightwatchman for the town was proved early on Tuesday morning at 3 a.m., when the danger of a serious fire was averted by Mr. Crow during his rounds. He noticed smoke coming from the direction of St. Johns Hall and quickly made off to the spot and found an incipient fire in the dressing room of the hall. Some stage scenery, as well as part of the floor was afire, but prompt measures extinguished the flames. The hall had been occupied the evening before by the boy scouts, and the Rev. Gavin, who was present, stated that everything appeared alright when he left. The championship meeting for athletics for 1922-1923, under the auspices of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycle Union, has been allocated to Taranaki, and should the local athletes put in an application they stand a chance of it being held here. The championships cover two days and will draw a large number of visitors. At the examination held under the auspices of the Associated Board of the R.A.M. and R.C. of Music, the following passes were awarded:—Primary division: Jean de Launay (Miss Marlow); Doris Herbert (Mrs. Black); Pearl Brough, Hasel Phillips, R. J. Murray (Miss So-wry); Arthur Wells (Miss Brough). Elementary division: Leslie Rowe (Miss Marlow); Stella Brough (Miss Sowry) ; Ida Hansen, Qhristine Stewart (Mrs. Black). Lower division: Claudie Larking (Miss Button). Higher division: Emily Foster (Mrs. Marlow); Elsie Gaustad, Mavis Gaustad (Miss Marlow). The inspector of fire brigades (Mr. Hugo) paid his periodical visit of inspection on Tuesday ‘ night. After tne Fire Brigade had shown the inspector their practical capabilities he addressed them. He said there was a great improvement in the brigade since his last visit.

The headmaster of the .State school reports that the attendance is still on the increase. The roll number is now 385, and the average attendance last week was 360.8, while the highest for any one day was 368, all being- records. Mr. J. Parry was sworn in as a justice of the Peace on Tuesday last beiore Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M. To-morrow (Saturday) sees the opening of the cricket season in Waitara. when teams representing Waitara and Brixton will try conclusions on the Camp Reserve at 1 p.m. Mr. L. de Launav has had his team in training for some weeks past, and it is expected that he and Mr. Limmer will top the score for Brixton.
