To-day, the half-holiday, was taken advantage of by the committees of the sports' and associated shop assistants’ queen candidates, to hold functions to advance their candidates’ interests. The shop assistants held a. very successful cafe chautant in the Medina tea rooms, a most enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental items being given. The rooms were appropriately decorated in gold and black, the candidate’s campaign colors, and were crowded throughout the afternoon. The sports’ held a fancy-dress football and hockey match on Victoria Park, and the game attracted a good crowd of supporters. Prior to the match the teams, in costumes of every descrip- i tion. and headed by the band, marched • in procession from the post office to the park. The men were dressed in feminine attire, and there was no lack of war paint and grease, some of the effects being extremely grotesque. It has not been definitely decided which teams won the matches. The referee, Mr. F. D. Gaffaney, and a number of th# ‘'spectators” joined in the football with absolute abandon, and the game was not played strictly according to the latest rules. The dance held at Midhirst last night in the interests of the Midhirst-Whare-huia candidate was fixed to take place on the tennis courts, but rain set in and the attendance of supporters repaired to the hall, where an enjoyable evening was spent. To-morrow (Friday) night the Band and Fire Brigade candidate is being given a dance chantant at Cardiff, and no effort is being spared to make the function a success. A special picture programme, supported by community singing and solo numbers, will be given in support of the sports candidate tomorrow night, and the sports serenaders will perform on the theatre balcony from 7.30 p.m. GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. Cooper, of the staff of Bellringer Bros., and Mr. T. G. Grubb and staff for the manner in which they have exhibited and sold flowers. KING’S THEATRE. The sports committee, under the baton of Mr. G. Wilson, are making every possible move in order to get their candidate, Miss Nash, at the top of the list. Their next move will be the big entertainment which will be given at the King’s on Friday night. A varied programme. comprising pictures, music and singing has been arranged. The title of the star attraction on the picture programme is “Chivalrous Charley, a Selznick super production, which can only be described as one of the brightest, best and wittiest of pictures. The story is simple, yet it is told in a manner which should hold the interest of the most fastidious spectator. There are no dull moments. Right at the start the fun throttle is fully opened, then the laugh clutch is let in with a bang, and away you go over the road of laughter, romance and thrills, rounding all the corners on two wheels. The following wellknown artists will also contribute items: Mr. Peter Aitken, Miss Sheahan, and Archie Bills. A special orchestra of six instrumentalists will be in attendance.
