DEATH PENALTY FOR MINER.
STRONG FEELING AROUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Capetown, Oct. 4. The confirmation of the death sentence on Stassen, a miner convicted of shooting two natives during the Rand trouble, has caused great feeling irt Labor and Nationalist circles and -protests and appeals for a reprieve are being showered upon the Government from all quarters. A mass meeting of workers in the Capetown City Hall, addressed by Mr. Tom Mann, adopted a resolution demanding an immediate reprieve. The execution is fixed for to-morrow. Referring to the resolutions by Labor organisations in all parts of the world condemning the Rand death sentence as judicial murder, the Cape Times maintains that the facts fn the Stassen case reveal wanton dirsegard of native life. In so grave a matter no Government can allow itself to be swayed by sentiment. The Government’s decision ought to be accepted, as it was reached dispassionately and in accordance with the law and in the highest interests of the country.
