BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY.
TROUBLE OVER WAGES. By Telegraph.—Press. Assn.—Copyright. London, Oct. 4. ’■ A critical position has arisen in the coal industry. On ibehalf of the miners it is stated that wages now are 60 points below the cost of living, and it was suggested that 31s per ton be added to the pithead price of coal in order to secure a living wage. The owners declared that the men generally are not so badly off as represented, and contend that the industry is not providing sufficient revenue to pay increased wages and that a further reduction in railway transport charges is the only way to revive trade. The miners’ executive is submitting proposals to the National Coal Board to meet the situation.
