CIRCULAR ROAD RACE. A meeting of the Taranaki circular road race general committee was held at the Soldiers’ Club on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance of members, and Mr. J. McLeod presided. Mr. J. Bennett reported that Mr. Moyes would be willing for the High School boys to run two steeplechases (one for boys under 15 and another for boys over 15) on the racecourse on the afternoon of the road race, the distance to be one round of the course. It was decided to accept Mr. Moyes’ offer and leave the handicapping of the boys in the hands of the school handicappers. Letters were received from various local bodies intimating that no objections would be made to the cyclists racing over the roads under their jurisdiction. It was decided to have an official programme printed. It was also decided to visit all the towns on the route of the race on Sunday to make arrangements with the local committees for the day. Several members present expressed their willingness to make the trip and any others desirous of doing so are asked to communicate with the secretary immediately. The race was fixed to start at 9.30 a.m. and it was expected that the first man would appear between 3.30 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The competitors will enter the racecourse on the Avenue Road and ride the reverse way of the course, finishing in front of the total isn tor house. An endeavor is to be made to secure the services of the Pipe Band for the afternoon. Arrangements were made for the provision of afternoon tea and soft drinks on the course. Messrs. C. Fairbrother and J. McLeod were appointed a sub-committee to make inquiries as to the holding of a suitable ceremony for the presentation of the prizes. The treasurer intimated that only nine members’ subscriptions had been received. Those members who have not yet paid are requested to do so immediately to the secretary (Mr. E. L. Humphries). SUCCESS OF HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOY. Old boys of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School will be interested to learn that the Canterbury College steeplechase, held on Saturday last, was won by H. L. Lucena, who started off the 5 min. mark, covering the fivemile course in 36 mln. 15 sec. He Is reported to have run an excellent race, gradually overhauling the leaders to win by 120 yards at the finish. The fastest time was 34 min. 42 secs. “Lucy,” as he was popularly called at the N.P.8.H.5., was always prominent in the school’s annual steeplechase and during his last year at the school he gained the fastest time in that event.
