KAPONGA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The opening of the tennis season by the local club took place last Thursday. The committee had worked hard to have the courts put in order and, as the weather was fine, a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. About fifty members were present and Air. C. A. Anderson (Vice-President) declared the courts open for the 1922-23 season. Afternoon tea was provided by the male members of the club. Air. L. H. Baigent, a former resident of Kaponga, is here on a short visit and has been looking up old friends, In common with the rest of Taranaki, we have beeyn experiencing beautiful weather lately and the grass and gardens are benefiting accordingly. The opening of the fishing season attracted quite a number of visitors to this district, and cars were to be seen at every stream. No big catches are reported. Our local deep sea fishermen also had a day out. and were favoured with good luck. Their catch included 100 cod, six schnapper, sharks etc., etc. Another party caught about 30 schnapper and some, very big sharks. The long night dance ,in connection with the Convent School Euchre parties was held last Friday evening. Though the attendance was not as good as expected all present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Attracted by the beautiful weather experienced lately, quite a number of people motored to the Dawson Falls Mountain House last Sunday and were rewarded by a wonderfully clear view of the Plains. This house is evidently becoming more popular every year, judging by the number of visitors who come from all over the Dominion. A committee consisting of Messrs Betts, Fearon and Melville has been appointed by the management of the round the Afountain Road Race. These gentlemen have charge of the Kaponga end of the race and are responsible for keeping the road clear, providing refreshments and telegraphing the names of the leading riders through Kaponga. It is to be hoped that the management committee insists that every rider wears a number, so that he can be identified by the public.
