OBJECTIONS TO RATE. MEETING AT RAHOTU. About 70 ratepayers in the Rahotu riding of the Egmont county met in the Rahotu hall last night for the purpose of entering a protest against the action of the Egmont County Council in levying a rate of 2Ad in the £ on a valuation of £774,264, whereas the rate on the Oeo riding was only 2}d over a ratable value of £506,428, while the Oeo riding had an overdraft of £622 in excess of the larger Rahotu riding. Mr. W. Green was voted to the chair. After considerable discussion, which was replied to by Mr. M. O’Brien (chairman of the Egmont County Council) and others, Mr. T. P. Hughson proposed and Mr. T. Willcox seconded: “That this meeting of ratepayers requests the Egmont County Council to take steps to adopt proportional representation on a basis of ward valuation.”—Carried unanimously. A further motion proposed by Mr. W. Green and seconded by Mr. A. F. Chapman, that the council be asked to strike a fair and proportional rate over the whole county, was also carried unanimously.
