DAIRY HERD DISEASES.

LECTURE TO FARMERS. Under the auspices of the Eltham Dairy Company, a lecture was given by Mr. Wood, M.R.C.V.S., to fanners at Eltham on Friday night. Mr. Wood’s lecture, which was confined to various diseases suffered by cows and the treatment, proved both Interesting and instructive. The subject was handled in plain English, and its freedom from technical terms made it very easy to understand. In commencing, Mr. Wood spoke at same length on milk fever, due to the uneven development of the dairy cow, in which everything was sacrificed for fat, or to the lowering or the animal’s vitality by indigestion or other cause. The disease was wrongly named, as when suffering from this disease the cow’s temperature was under normal. Pure air was the only successful treatment, and he advised every farmer to obtain a proper milk fever syringe for this purpose. A bicycle pump would answer the purpose, but in using anything but a properly sterilised syringe there was always a danger of complications being set up which would otherwise be avoided. The inflation would be carried out at hourly intervals if necessary. He emphatically condemned the use of any liquid injection. Contagious abortion was the next subject dealt with. In tnrs connection science was. he said, up against an apparently unsuronountable difficulty, being unable to cultivate *he serum which was known to combat the disease. He advised his hearers to leave

this matter to nature, and providing there were no complications, nature would effect a cure—but would probably take about three years to ‘do so. He strongly condemned the use of perchloride of mercury and other drugs. If there were complications they might syringe with a very weak solution of Condy's fluid. Finally, Mr. Wood dwelt briefly on the subject of vaginitis, not a very prevalent disease, nor a contagious one, and easily cured )>y washing with a weak solution of Condy’s fluid.—Argus.
