WEST END SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the West End school was held last night. Present: Messrs. Jas. Garcia (chairman), J. Lobb* J. Hawker, J. Brokenshire and W. I. Broome (secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs. A. Coad and E. J. Carr. Air. O. G. Ericksten forwarded his resignation as a member of the committee, as he found it impossible to attend the meetings.—Accepted with regret. Mr. J. Hoskin also forwarded his resignation. Members expressed regret, referring to the valuable assistance Mr. Hoskin had given as a member of the committee It was resolved to defer consideration until next meeting, and meanwhile Mr. Hoskin is to be asked to reconsider his decision. It was resolved to grant £lO towards the school sports fund, to be utilised in the purchase of cricket material for the boys and rounders material, etc., for the gir’s. It was also resolved to thank the Western Park Cricket Club for their offer to make two of the schoolboys honorary members of the club. The headmaster stated that J. Ewart and W. Priar had been selected. The headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) reported that at the end of last quarter the \Toll number was 644. During the quarter 51 had been admitted and 49 had withdrawn, leaving the present roll number 646. The average attendance for the quarter had been 591, a percentage of 91.7. Since last meeting Mrs. Russell, from St. Clair, Dunedin, had taken up her position as fourth assistant, and the school was now permanently staffed for the first time since the beginning of the year. Dr. Gunn would be visiting the school on Tuesday and Wednesday, in continuance of her medical examination of the scholars. Ou Wednesday, the pupil teachers who are holding criticism lessons at the Central School are visiting the school in order to witness the montesorri work that is being carried out by Miss Sharpe.
The secretary submitted a balance sheet in connection with the recent concerts, which showed that the total receipts had been £7O Ils 6d and the expenditure £2B 14s lOd, leaving a credit balance of £4l 16s Bd. Members considered the position very satisfactory, and congratulated the secretary on the promptitude with which the balance sheet was brought down. It was resolved to place on record the committee’s appreciation of the splendid services rendered by Messrs. J. Hoskin, A. Coad, J. Lovell. T. Petty, Misses Rita and Ruby Sole, A. K. Anthony and W. Hawker, and all others who had assisted in making the entertainment a success. It was also resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr. W. H. Moyes, principal of the High School, in connection with the assistance rendered by the school orchestra. It w<s also resolved to thank the Taranaki Amusements Coy., through Mr. G. H. Saunders, for their liberal donation.
