STEPS TOWARDS RECOVERY. THE COST TO BRITAIN. HUGE SUMS EXPENDED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 2, 12.20 a.m. London, Sept. 30. Dr. T. J. Maenamara (Minister of Labor), speaking at Nottingham, announced that the Government is finding an extra £10,000,000 to help municipalities to give work to the unemployt... The Government has also sanctioned credits totalling £21,000.000 to help traders to recover foreign markets, and "• - tinue about another year, also guaranteeing loans to the extent of £2s,uuu,000 for the electrification of railways, docks and other public works. It is proposed to raise this amount to £50,000,000. He tfdded that since the slump the Government and municipalities had provided £40,000,000 to £50,000,000 for work for the unemployed, and they would spend a further £10,000,000 during the winter. He said that under the unemployment insurance £95,000,000 were available for the coming winter and spring.
