INQUIRY FOR A WIFE.
81 TO PICK FROM. London, Sept. 13, A former soldier, now a resident of Queensland, ..apparenly recognising that he, like George Are’s character is “asking to be stung,” a month ago wrote to the Mayor of Leamington “because the statistical exeess of women over men in Warwickshire is very likely to produce a good, sweet wife.” The inquirer, a stalwart six-footer, lives on a soldiers’ settlement containing 400 farmers, ranging from a colonel to privates. Eighty of the 400 are bachelors, “each on his own grazing and orchard land.” The Mayor informed the special representative of the Sydney Sun that he has received 81 letters from ladies in all parts of the country who are interested in the Queenslander seeking a wife. The letters have been forwarded to the inquirer, who presumably has the first choice, this leaving 80 girls to take part in the golden wedding ballot for the remaining 79 prizes.
