“GLOOMY AND UNSETTLED.” AUCKLANDER’S IMPRESSION OF THE MOTHER COUNTRY. A gloomy picture of the Old Country was painted by Mfr. W. C. Beswick, of Eden Terrace, who returned to New Zealand on the Dorset last week. “I went Home on indenting business,” he remarked to a Star reporter, “but I was not at all favourably impressed with the conditions obtaining in Manchester and London. The whole outlook seemed unpromising, gloomy and unsettled. To make matters worse rain fell nearly every day while I was there. From June 4 till July 20 there were only two fine days. Then, there were the labour troubles and strikes. Coming from fair New Zealand the conditions made a profound impression on my mind. I blame the stewards appointed for the purpose of acting as mediators between the employers and the men, but they do not justify their existence—at least not in that capacity. Most of the time they are stirring up bad feeling, sowing the seeds of discontent in the foundries and factories, and preaching a doctrine of anything but work. Old England will lose her trade if this kind of thing continues. It is the Labour unions and their stewards who are to blame. I could say more, but I don’t feel so disposed. However, I can say that the unrest and discontent affects all branches of commercial life in England. This was my third trip to the Old Land, but I can only reiterate that conditions industrial ly are worse than ever I have found them before. Consequently the germ has infected social and home life and everybody seems unsettled. It is good to be back.”
