CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held last evening. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. a. G. Smith, M.P.) Mr. T. M. Avery pre-* sided, there being also present: Mrs. Jemieson, ’Messrs. F. W. Croker, F. A, Coleman (secretary) and H. A. Stratford (headmaster). The headmaster’s report stated that the average daily attendance for th* weeks ending August 25, September 15 and September 22 had been 629.8, or 94.8 per cent, of the average roll. The number at present on the register was 673. There were several waiting to be admitted. Montessori material to tha value of £8 15s had arrived and had been placed in the lower primer classes. “Next week,” continued the report, “a series of criticism lessons, under the direction of the inspectors, will be held at the school. There will be about 40 visiting teachers present, so that special organisation of classes must be made.” Mr. T. Hardgreaves had turfed and top-dressed a cricket pitch, which should be of much advantage to the boys. The Borough Council forwarded a copy of a letter sent to the principal of the Technical College in reference to the Technical College rifle range, for which an application was granted subject to conditions (already published). The conditions imposed were approved by the committee.
