THE HERRIN MASSACRES.
ACCUSED ARRAIGNED. DATE OF TRIAL DISCUSSED. Telegraph.-'Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 26, 9.5 p.m. New York, Sept. 26. At Motion, Illinois, 41 men indicted for murder in various degrees, in connection with the Herrin massacre, were arraigned. Thirty-three were released on bonds varying from 5000 to 20,000 dollars, and eight, were held without bond. Two others, indicted for murder, have not yet been apprehended. The men to whom bail was refused were designated by the Grand Jury as the ringleaders. Only one is of foreign birth, tho others belonging to old American families. Townsmen of the indicted men supplied the bail in those cases where it was granted, the total being more than three million dollars. Union officials canvassed all the business men, declaring that now was the time for them to show whether they were for or against the union. The prosecuting attorney asked that the trial should begin on October 1, but the union lawyers moved to have the trial set down for February, on the ground that more than 500 witnesses must be collected. A considerable number of the 214 men indicted on various charges have not yet surrendered themselves, but the union has promised that all will give themselves up.
