A condemnation of the ‘‘backyard Parliaments of the women of Australia’ has just been uttered by Rev. Father of Lithgow, New South Wales. that it was a terrible thing
that the gossip over the back fences was practically all scandal, Very often to the detriment of a weaker member of their sex. An unbridled tongue was a woman’s worst enemy. It was more dangerous and often caused more harm than a wrong action. Even in socalled social scandal was frequently the main topic of conversation. There appeared to be something peculiarly delightful to some people to drag into light the indiscretions of youth, even though these had been sincerely regretted and “lived down.’ “Charity of 1 bought,” concluded Father Doherty, "will inevitably produce charity of speech. Would to God that there was more of it among the women of our country.”
