THE VOLUNTEERS.

TARANAKI MEN OFFER. 540 AT NEW PLYMOUTH many IN OTHER TOWNS.

The five hundred mark was reached and passed at New Plymouth yesterday and to date over 540 volunteers have signified their willingness to serve. Names are being continually handed in personally, over the telephone, and by letter, while yesterday advice was received from Opunake that a considerable number of men from that district are anxious to serve. A sergeant-major will proceed there to-day for the purpose of recording names, as well as attending to other Defence Department business.

The type of recruit offering is generally young and virile, though there are some elderly men only too ready to serve in any capacity. The very strong leavening of returned soldiers who have offered to go will mean a lot to the force if it is created, as, once they are in khaki again and handle a rifle, the knowledge of the technicalities of war, which they may have temporarily forgotten, will come back.
