BOROUGH AFFAIRS

HYDRO-ELECTRIC WORKS. In his report the borough manager, Mr. F. T. Bellringer, set out at length the details of the estimates and the actual costs of the various portions of the hydro-electric works. The salient pointe in connection with the various returns are as follows: The cost of tunnel No. 1 exceeded the estimate of £13331 by approximately £3350. The work comprised under the heading of contract No. 3 was carried out by day labor. The estimate was £46024, to which must be added £B5OO being the estimate o-f the cost of increasing the size of No. 2 tunnel, the forebay and other works in connection therewith. This figure gives a total of £54524. The actual expenditure to August 31 is £51947; consulting engineers estimate to complete, £12540; contract No. 4 valves for forebay, etc., £1611; contract No. 4 (a) intake gates (balance), £159; alterations for water supply. £4500; making a total of £70757.

The cost of this work when completed will therefore exceed the estimate by approximately £16230. Against this however, there will be a certain amount of working plant and materials, including locomotive rails and buildings, either for disposal or to be kept for use in the construction of the dam and other works should these be gone on with in the near future.
