GLOAMING THE BRILLIANT. BEAUFORD WELL BEATEN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Sept. 18. The Herald says: No excuse can be found for Beauford, who was beaten, and well beaten. On the day the better horse won. Enthusiasts are now looking forward to the meeting on Derby day. The Telegraph says: Beauford secured four lengths’ break, but Gloaming was at his rival’s girth at the St. Leger stand, and passed him in a few more strides. He could have won by four lengths had his rider desired. When Gloaming went down no excuses were offered. On behalf of Beauford one hears many good sportsmen who will not detract from the splendour of the victory. Young said he had Gloaming on the rails for the first furlong and found the going heavy. He took him wide, and then the horse took the bit in his mouth and made up ground in such a manner that he knew he had the race won three furlongs from home. Wood cannot understand it. It was just one of those happenings the man on top cannot explain.
