THE AMERICAN FINAL. TILDEN BEATS JOHNSTON. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, Sept. 15. Tilden defeated Patterson 4—-6, C—4, 6—3, In the second set Patterson grew erratic and was unable to clear the net. The American spurted in the third set, winning three games successively on Patterson’s errors. In the fourth set Tilden opened with a spectacular game, overwhelming Patterson with a terrific service and hard-driven placements and unreturnable volleys. Patterson won only the first game of his service. New York, Sept. 16. The final match between Tilden and Johnston was hard fought, Tilden winning 4—6, 3—6, 6—2, 6—3, 6—4. In the first set Tilden lost the first game on his service 5-—7, and the second o—4 on outs. He then rallied, winning the third 4—o, and the fourth 4—l, but became erratic, and Johnston won the next two games 4—2 and 4—2. Tilden rallied and took the seventh 4—l, but Johnston won the next 4—o. Tilden won the ninth 4—o, but was wild in the tenth, giving Johnston the game 4—2 and the set 6—4. In the second set Tilden won the first game to loVe off his own service. He broke through Johnston’s service and won the second 4—l, but became erratic, Johnston taking the third 4—2 and the fourth to love. Tilden won the fifth 7—5. Johnston’s superior ground work won him the sixth 4—2, and the seventh 4—l. Tilden was playing too fast in an effort to weary his opponent; he found the net often and his service went to pieces, Johnston winning the eighth 4—2, the ninth 4—l, and the set 6—3. In the third set Tilden steadied and broke through Johnston’s service, winning the first game 4—l. and driving Johnston to the back court, won the second 5—3. Johnston spurted and won the third, but Tilden strengthening, took the *ourth 4—o. Then he again cracked on his service, Johnston winning the sixth 4—l. Tilden broke through Johnston’s service, winning the seventh 4—l, the eighth 6—4, and the Set 6—2. In the fourth set Tilden went wild, constantly netting the ball and bungling his service, Johnston winning the first three games 4—l, 4—2. and B—6. Tilden recovered, winning the fourth 5—3. Johnston cracked up in the fifth, and Tilden won the balance 4—l, 4—2, 4—o, 4—2, and 4—l, making five straight games, and the set 6—3. In the fifth set, Tilden, serving terrifically, won the first game 7—5. Johnston won the second 4—o. Tilden, maintaining his speed, took thet third 4—o, and the fourth 4—2. Johnston was steady, but Tilden was too speedy in attack, winning the fifth 4—l. Johnston won the next two 4—2 and 7—5 on Tilden’S net errors, but Tilden took the eighth 4—l. Then Johnston broke through Tilden’s service, winning the ninth 4—2. Tilden won the tenth 4—2, the set 6—4, and the championship. ‘The Australian team will sail homeward in the Niagara, which leaves Vancouver on September 22.
