MENACE OF FIREBLIGHT.
STEPS TO CHECK SPREAD. A Bill relating to fireblight has been introduced in the House of Represent” atives. It provides that for the purpose of preventing the spread of and eradicating fireblight, the Government may declare any specified portion of New Zealand to be a “commercial fruit-grow-ing district.” Then regulations may be made for the trimming or cutting of all hawthorn growing within the district, or any part of the district. The Government may order the complete destruction of hawthorn in the district if fireblight is present. An inspector may do the work at the expense of the occupier of the land, if the order is disregarded. The penalty for an offence against the Act is a fine not exceeding £5 for the first offence and not exceeding £5O for each subsequent offence. The provisions of the Noxious Weeds Amendment Act of last year regarding hawthorn are to be repealed and all orders declaring hawthorn to be a nox< ious weed are to be deemed to be re” voked.
