GLOAMING BEATS BEAU FORD. VICTORY IN RECORD TIME. AN EXCITING FINISH. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Sept 17, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. IG. -M the Rcsehill races the Hill Stakes resulted: Gloaming (Young) L Beauford (Wooa, Sccrax (Munro) 3, Won by a length and a quarter, with five lengths between second and third. Time, Imin. SSfcsee. Gloaming crowned himself with a fresh glory by the decisive fashion In which he disposed of Beauford In a record time for the Rosehill course. According to tbc great bulk of the turf cognoscenti, Beauford, since the preSaturday, merited a special pedestal in Aiu.ralasian turfdom as the result of his Triumphs over Eurythmic and Gloaming, but many of the latter’s adtmirers were still confident he wouold turn the tables with the weather and course conditiohs favorable. Despite ominous clouds in the forenoon, the weather was beautiful, but the course heavy. When the barrier rose Gloaming was caught side on, but quickly moved into fourth position. Beauford went to the front almost at the jump, and at five furlongs was two lengths clear of Wish Wynne. Gloaming being two and a half lengths further back. Rounding the bend Gloaming gained on Wish Wynne, and entering the straight set after Beauford. To the great astonishment of The crowd the New Zealander overhauled the leader, who appeared unable even to challenge the visitor in the final furlong to the post. The crowd, which had been momentarily dumbed by the easy manner In which Gloaming accomplished victory, quickly realised the position and lustily cheered the visitor until he was taken back to the saddling paddock. A noteworthy feature of the finish was Beauford's failure to hang to his rival when challenged at the final turn.
The Rosehlll Guineas resulted: Caserra 1. Cliffdale 2, Tressayr 3. Won by three lengths. Time, imin. 55see. The Shag ran unplaced In the three-year-old handicap. Received Sept. 17. 5.5 p.m. Sydney. Sept. 17. There was a record crowd at Rosehill to see the Gloaming-Beauford battle. The Sunday Sun says that when the New Zealander challenged Beauford he went past him just as decisively as Beauford passed him the previous Saturday. The Newcastle horse could go do faster, whereas Gloaming had a kick left which landed victory. He prc-red to have more pace than he was credited with, but the lustre of Beauford was not dimmed by the fact that with 9.7 up he finished a length and a quarter behind the mighty New Zealander.

The appeal of Henry Ernest Goldfinch against the decision of the Licensing Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference in not granting an application for a jockey's license for 1922-23 was heard by Messrs. Perrett, Vallance and Goodbehere. The judgment delivered was: "We have carefully considered the appeal by Goldfinch against the refusal of the licensing committee of the Racing Conference to grant his application for a jockey’s license for the current year, and have heard evidence by Goldfinch supporting his appeal. We are of opinion that the action of the licensing committee is in order in this respect. Goldfinch openly admitted to v.s that he had been in the habit of associating with undesirable persons
and that he had been guilty of a breach of part 21 of rule 5 of the Rules of Racing, which reads: 'No jockey shall give Information respecting a trial or regarding any horse he n*ay be engaged to ride in any race or work to any person other than the owner or trainer of the horse.’ Goldfinch does not appear to realise the seriousness of his actions. His private life is clean, and in view of this fact and that he openly admitted his guilt to us, we are of the opinion that he should be given another chance, therefore we recommend he be granted a conditional jockey’s license dating from January 1 next. AN EXPENSIVE YEARLING. London. Sept. 14. The Hon. George Lambton purchased a Tetriarch—Lady Josephine filly for 9100 guineas at the Doncaster yearling sales.
