REWARD FOR SCHOLARS.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE COUNTRY. DEFINITE NUMBER ALLOTTED. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Recently the Minister of Education was asked whether he could make better arrangements for the allocation of scholarships to country children who were at a disadvantage as compared with city child- ! ren. The Minister then said that country had the advantage; in fact, that I the aggregate of marks required in their case was 10 per cent, less than that rei quired in cities, where the schools were i better staffed and the equipment was su- | perior. The question was reviewed to-day by Mr J. A. Nash (Palmerston North), and ' in reply the Minister said that he had been making some inquiries and found that there were some shortcomings in the working of the regulations. It had now been decided to rescind the regulations and allot a definite number of scholarships to the country schools mentioned. Twenty-five scholarships would now be definitely and specifically allotted to all schools of grades 1,2 and 3.
