ASKING THE IMPOSSIBLE.

RIMUTAKA LINE DEVIATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 14. Replying to an influential deputation from city and Wairarapa bodies urging the necessity of proceeding immediately with the deviation of the Rimutaka railway line, the Prime Minister said that a .great deal of work had already been done on surveys regarding Tauherenikau deviation. The total cost of constructing that route was estimated at £1,000,000. He did not know what the other routes would cost. He agreed that the Government was committed to deviating the line, but it could not do the impossible. It was quite possible it might make an early start with the work next year. The Premier said the policy had been to complete the lines already commenced. The Government had been anxious to complete the line connecting the two coasts in the South Island, and work was proceeding on the Fast Coast railway. Surveys for the Wairarapa deviation were well under way, and it was clear whatever route was decided upon the cost would be heavy and the work difficult.
