A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mr. Jabez Wright, member of the Assembly for Broken Hill. A Paris message reports that the King and Queen of Servia have arrived there en route to London. The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr. William Cook, a grand-nephew of Captain Cook, the great navigator. He was 97 year* of age.—Press Association. Out of fifty applicants Mr. Angus Craig, deputy-superintendent of the Wanganui Fire Brigade, has been appointed superintendent of the Hamilton brigade. —Press Association. A Dunedin message states that Mr. C. S. Owen, well-known in commercial circles, and last year’s president of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, died on Sunday on the way to church. Mrs. Mary Foster, of Roslyn, also collapsed en route to .church. Death has removed an old and respected settler, Mr. Walter Sparks Smith, of 184 Ferguson Street, Palmerston North. The deceased gentleman, whose loss will be mourned by a wide circle of friends, was the last survivor of the wreck of the Strathmore. This vessel left Gravesend for Otago on April 19, 1875, with 50 passengers and a crew of 38. While off the' Crozet Islands she struck a rock and foundered, 40 of those on board losing their lives. The survivors reached the shore on the barren rocks of the Crozets. The late Mr. Smith, who was.formerly in the seryiee of the Union Steam Ship Co., Wellington, had reached the age of 72 years, and is survived -by his widow, Mrs. jgUsabstb Smith! of Palmowtoa North.
