ELTHAM.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. A meeting of the council of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday night. A letter was received from the Taranaki Chamber of regarding the speeding up of the mail train and the suggestion that Eltham might be cut tout. It was realised that this would be disastrous and grossly unfair to so important a district, and the Taranaki Chamber would do everything in its power to assist Eltham to combat such a proposal should it actually eventuate. The Taranaki Chamber did not, however, consider it at all likely. — The letter was received. The question of the amalgamation of the Chamber, the Progress Committee and the Retailers’ Association was discussed at some length, the chairman submitting a draft of suggested terms for consolidating the three bodies, yet safeguarding the interests of each. Members expressed the opinion that the proposal was an acceptable one, and it was decided to forward copies to the other two bodies for their consideration. An invitation was received from the Progress Committee for all members of the Chamber to attend a business men’s tea to ‘be held on Wednesday evening, when an address will be delivered by the president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce (Mr. T.
