JAPANESE AND KAWAU.
NO OFFICIAL OFFER. Mr. E. W. Foxall, English Secretary |o the Japanese Consulate-General in {Sydney, writes to an Auckland paper:— : W have before me your issue of August 12, wherein appears a paragraph headed “Japanese and Kawau,” referring to a statement made by Mr. A. J. Fajrjner during his examination in ruptcy. ? “As my name appears in this paragraph, I desire to explain that in 1915, in addition to occupying the position of English Secretary to the Japanese Con-sulate-General in Sydney, I was also pM^ er in the FotLII, iroorporated "4 n< |i my official engagemcht the-Imperlal Japanese Gover ßinertt allow me the right of practice. It was in my private professional capacity, and at his request, that I introduced Mr. Farmer —who was a client of mine—to Mr. Nishimura ; then manager $f the Sydney branch ofy thX Mitsui BuSsan Kaisha, after havingJdfe* tinctly told Mr. Farmer that the Japanese Governhent would not consider the offer of Kawau Island. T - “I understand that Mr. Nishimura f -feyred the matter to his head office jn Tokio, who informed him that one of their inspectors would be visiting New Zealand in the course of a few months, and, if he could spare the time, would inspect and report upon the property. I have never heard whether such inspection was made. The main point which I wish to make clear and emphasise is that the Japanese Governhent was never in treaty for the purchase of Kawau Island, and any statement by anyone to that effect is entirely erroneous.”
