BEAUFORD BEATS GLOAMING. VICTORY BY THREE-QUARTERS OF A LENGTH. KEEN TUSSLE IN HEAVY GOING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 10, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 9. The Chelmsford Stakes resulted: Beauford (Wood) 1, Gloaming (Young) 2, David (Duncan) 3. Won by three-quarters of a length, with a quarter of a length between second and third. Time, Imln. 53sec. There were fourteen starters. Steady rain during the forenoon failed to diminish enthusiasm In the Beauford-Gloamlng contest, though a plethora of macintoshes and wet weather attire robbed Randwick of the bright, gay setting worthy of the occasion. After lunch the weather cleared beautifully, but the track was heavy. A feature of the match was the remarkably even division of the public and the turf tipsters in their fancies, with Beauford slightly In favour. Much depended on the post positions, Gloaming drawing seven and Beauford fourteen. Gloaming jumped to the front immediately and Beauford was slightly left. Passing the mile post Gloaming led Tressayr, with Beauford moving into third place. Gloaming, Tressayr and Soorak led the field round the bend, and Beauford was seemingly unable to overtake the trio. Furious challenged the leaders entering the straight, but Beauford came fast and overtook Gloaming at the half distance. The New Zealander Responded gamely to the rider’s prompting, but though sticking gamely failed to head the Newcastle galloper. Mason said Gloaming was beaten on his merits. Beauford stock appreciably increased as a result of the conquest, but admirers of Gloaming are satisfied with the New Zealander’s performance on heavy going. TRAMWAY HANDICAP.—Rostrum 1, Fleuriste 2, Loyal Irish 3. Won by half a length. Time, lmln. 26%sec. SPRING HANDICAP.—Wirri way 1, Molyneaux 2, Llanthony 3. W’on by a short head. Time, 2min. Tsec. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. “FAIRLY AND SQUARELY BEATEN.” Received Sept. 10, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 10. Between fifty and sixty thousand witnessed the Beauford-Gloamlng battle, a record for a Tattersalls meeting. Mason, in an interview, said Gloaming was as fit as could be and was fairly and squarely beaten. Two years ago it might have been different; he was not so young as he used to be. Beauford was undoubtedly a great galloper. Cupidon finished fifth in the Spring Handi-cap.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. MARTON MEETING. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. The scratching of all the favorites in the St. Leger leaves only second-class horses in the race. It is doubtful if It. has ever been contested by such a poor lot. Lord Woolfl rington’s pair, Preston Grange and Fred Power, seem to. be the best left in. As they are being trained in different stables—the former at' Gilpin’s and the latter at Fred Darling’s—Lord Woolarington intends to run both on their merits. The race is very open. Villars, Ceylonese and Corcyrlan are others mentioned as having a chance. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
