The Dan O’Brien Shield was the trophy at stake in the annual match between the Tukapa and Star senior teams, played at Pukekura Park on Saturday. Play was mostly of a desultory character, but Tukapa had no trouble in defending their claim to the shield and won by 23 points to 6. Tukapa attacked from the outset, compelling Star to force twice in succession. Sturmey burst through to Tukapa’s twenty-five, where Dean unsuccessfully attempted to “pot” at goal. G. and R. Hooker were allied in a speedy passing rush which ended with R. Hooker grounding the leather In the corner. His brother failed to goal. Tukapa kept Star penned in their own territory, Star attempting to relieve by kicking down field, but Priar received the ball and headed for the corner, brushing past several opponents, to score a good try. The spectacle of the full-back scoring appeared to tickle the crowd’s sense of humor immensely. G. Hooker goaled from a difficult angle. Failure by Priar to field a rolling ball gave Star a golden opportunity to open their scoring account, as three or four Star players had a clear field in front of them. The advantage, however, was lost. Then Du iford and Morris in turn had unsuccessful attempts to kick penalty goals. Star took a spell at attack, and at last, from a scrum near the line, the ball came out to Patterson, who dived over. Dunford’s kick was slightly wide and half-time arrived with the score. Tukana 8, Star 3. The second half was mostly in favor of Tukapa, who commenctd to pile on the poin»s. A drop-kick by H. Oliver sailed squarely between the posts, whilst a snappy passing rush in which R. Oliver, Hooker and Murphy took part, saw the last-named score by a try, which Hooker failed to convert. Another good passing rush by Tukapa ended with McAllum crossing the line. Hooker landing a goal. A rally by Star brought them into a favorable position, where an opportunity was given to Dunford to kick a good goal. A lightning dash down th’e line by R. Hooker towards the end of the game enabled Murphy to forge his way over again, G. Hooker falling with the kick. Time came with the score: Tukapa 23 Star 6 Mr. A. J. Papps refereed. HAWERA (28) v. CLIFTON (8). This game was played at Waitara and attracted a fair crowd of spectators. The game was not as one-sided as the scores would indicate, but Hawera were quicker 1 at seizing opportunities and their handling of the ball was neater than that of Clifton. Despite the rapidly-mounting score against them, Clifton frequently assumed the offensive, but their efforts were unavailing and Hawera quickly resumed the attack. Mr. Webb was referee. B GRADE. OLD BOYS THE CHAMPIONS. LEPPERTON MATCH WON. • Old Boys asserted their rights to the B grade championship by defeating Lepperton on their home ground by the narrow margin of 3 points to nil. Tlie game resolved itself mainly into a struggle between the opposing sets of forwards, Atkinson proving a thorn in the Old Boys’ side. The town team’s inside backs did not work with their usual combination, but thanks to an unconverted try by Penniall towards the end of the first spell. Old Boys established a lead which Lepperton could not nullify. In the second spell the Lepperton forwards worked well but could not score, and the game ended: Old Boys 3 Lepperton Nil. Mr. L. Goodadre refereed. CADETS AT PLAY. NEW PLYMOUTH (25) v. WAITARA (3).
