The late Lord Courtney told a Derby Day story which has a chance of immortality. The talk at the table happened to turn on the scandalous way in which some municipal authorities waste the ratepayers’ money by quite unnecessary journeys to London. Thereupon Lord Courtney recalled how, when he was Secretary to the Treasury, he was once waited upon by a deputation from ■Sligo to urge some, perfectly harmless request. Their wish was granted immediately, and some regret was expressed by the Minister that they should have taken the trouble to come so far about so trifling a concession, which might have been settled by a couple of letters. “You seem to forget,” somebody remarked, aside, “that to-morrow is Derby Day.”
