FARM AND DAIRY.

PROGRESS GF THE FREISIAN. The progress being made by the Friesian breed in England is wonderful. The enterprising policy of the 2000-gallon breed, says the English “Live Stock Journal.” will probably soon result in a 3000-gallon British marvel, so persistently is the famous Friesian cow Brooklands Colantha sticking to her guns. This treasure in the Hatche herd actually finished her six month’s work with a yield of 10 gallons in one day, or more milk than any British cow, except about 17 other Friesians, have produced in 24 hours The Friesian organisation has, therefore, to encourage all herd owners to breed better stock, decided to inaugurate a competition open to all comers, the entry fee and prize being respectively small and large enough to attract all classes, from the small holder to the Silcock Cup winner, or to the owner of the first 3000-gallon cow. The animals are to be judged at the society’s spring show and sale as two-year-olds and as yearlings. If less than 75 original entries are received for any class that class may be withdrawn. The prizes in each class are £lOO, £5O and £25. and a special prize of £25 is also awarded to the breeder of each first prize-winning anmial. Tn addition, the best male and the best female will receive a championship prize of £25. Although a strong-rooted plant, capable of utilising most of the plant food available in the soil, wheat pays for judicious manuring as well as, or possibly better than, any other cereal crop. Purebred sires are a most essential feature in the production of good stock- It 1 is never advisable to use a badi.y bred boar of any breed, as the resu.t viii variably disappointing.
