THE MALE CHOIR.
SUCCESSES AT WELLINGTON, Fuller particulars are now to hand concerning Tuesday's events in which New Plymouth were engaged. The Male Choir was very successful, securing two firsts and a second in the three sections concerned Mr. A. B. Macdonald annexed the bass solo, putting up a good performance on the test, “Prince Ivan’s Song.” The male quartet was of a representative character, including the Aeolian Quartet (Wellington), Blenheim (winners at Christchurch last year), and the Edgeware Methodist party (Christchurch). The New Plymouth Melody Four stood out in all departments, although the Aeolian party sang “O Lovely Night” very well indeed, the margin of points being 92 to 90. In the choir contest, New Plymouth won the own choice number with 86 points to 85, while Palmerston North secured the test piece by 85 to 83. Palmerston were a good combination, and featured an alto singer with fine effect. Both choirs fell in pitch in the unaccompanied item (own choice), but New Plymouth sang the number delightfully. The judge’s remarks on the New Plymouth Male Choir were: “Watchman,” recitative.—Well sung by the tenor, of robusto quality; fine voices generally; appear better than the first choir tenors; first and second bassse very good; insufficient acceleration in maestoso was the only difference between the choirs. Melody Four’s selection, “In Absence.”— Fine quartet, particularly well balanced; also great advantage in good first tenor; decidedly superior in light and shade; very fine rendering. Male Choir, own selection, “Evening.”— Brought out beautifully qualities of choir; singing on a level with Palmerston; the whole piece was most artistic; generally the choirs were as near equal as possible.
