INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Recently the Taranaki Provincial Prohibition Council applied for the use of the town Hall for a meeting on Sunday, September 17, in connection with the visit to this district of Mr. W. E. (Pussyfoot) Johnson, and they were informed that by resolution of the council the hall could’ be let on Sundays only for the purpose of a divine service. The Prohibition Council thereupon decided, in order to conform to the requirements of the council, to alter their arrangements, and sought permission to hold a r service, to be conducted by the . local . jgiinisters, and some outside clergymen, i
who would have associated with them Mr. Johnson, who is an accredited preacher of the Presbyterian Church of America. It is understood, however, that the application in its amended form was declined by the Inglewood Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night. Three earth tremors were distinctly felt in the vicinity of Inglewood on Sunday morning, the first at about 3.5 a.m. and the last before 4 a.m. Few people, however, were disturbed. Pigs at Inglewood’s Saturday mart (Newton King, Ltd.) still keep at a good price, and the demand amongst the farmers is, apparently, as yet in full swing. Last Saturday the sale was well attended. Calves sold at from 7s to 16s; weaner pigs 13s 6d to 21s, and stores 24s 6d to 38s; cocks made 3s to
3s 3d, hens 2s to 5s 6d, chickens lOd and ducks 2s 3d; Hawke’s Bay apples 4s for 20 lb., 6s to Ss for 40 lb. cases; general sundries at good prices.
