MR. SASTRI’S TOUR.
ARRIVAL AT VANCOUVER. SATISFIED WITH RESULTS. Vancouver, August 13. Mr. Srinivasa Sastri, the Indian statesman, has arrived by the Makura, which was delayed for half a day off Cape Flattery by an impenetrable fog. Otherwise the voyage was uneventful. Mr. Sastri appears well, and is satisfied with the general results of his Australian and New’ Zealand tour. He declared that Mr. Hughes and Mr. Massey gave him the fullest assurance that any present disabilities which Hindus are labouring under in Australia or New Zealand would be removed, including the present lack of franchise in three Australian States. Mr. Sastri will tour Canada for a month. When Mr. W. M. Hughes was shown the above cable message he would neither confirm nor deny Mr. Sastri’s statement. “You cannot expect me to say anything about that,” he said. “Whatever assurances I gave to Mr. Sastri were outlined in a speech I delivered in the House of Representatives. J cannot say any more.” In a speech at a Millions Club luncheon in Sydney on June 15, at which Mr. Hughes spoke, Mr. Sastri himself said: "Air. Hughes is accustomed to have his words brought up against him. These will be. I will take the story of this welcome back to India—l intend to exaggerate it, and I will say that although Mr. Hughes did not promise to give us satisfaction, he did so as nearly as a truth-speaking statesman possibly can. ’
