THE MODERN DANCE.

DR. FENWICK’S CRITICISM. “UTTERLY RIDICULOUS.” Christchurch, August 31. “Dr. Fenwick’s criticism of the modern dances is utterly ridiculous,” said Dr. M. 0. Louisson to-day. Dr. Louisson said he had been attending one dance a week for the past two years, and he would say emphatically that there was nothing I suggestive whatever about the modern 'dances. For those people whose occupaj tions kept them confined, he considered dancing the best exercise they could get. Moreover, the present day dances were not as bad as the older dances,... “Nowadays, in many of the dances, the correct way is for the lady not to clasp her partner,” said Dr.. Louisson. “Sorely it is much better for young peopleh.to dance every dance as they*now do, than to walk along the river bank, or sit outside during the dances, as they used to do. Dancing is an excellent exercise and I defy anyone to stand and watch, our modern dances and see the slightest sign of suggestiveness.” Dr. Louisson added that ,he .was a member of the Christchurch Jazz Club, and lie was not ashamed of the fact. j “I think Dr. Fenwick does not know what he is talking about,” said another medical man. “His remarks might have been applicable to the dances that were in vogue a few years ago, but all that is changed now. There is absolutely nothing suggestive about the modern dances and if Dr. Fenwick was a regular attender at dances, he would be aware of the fact. Igo to dances, very frequently and enjoy myself, and as for them being injurious to the morals of [ young people., well it is all nonsense. I The subject is too ridiculous for discussion, and I regret that Dr. Fenwick should have been 'so foolish as to give expression to such an opinion.”
