HORSE FAIRS. The Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society report having recently held their Opunake, Inglewood and Hawera spring horse fairs. Altogether at* these sales they yarded a total of 450 horses. At Opunake the entry was made up of a number of good draught mares and geldings. Also spring carters are hackneys. There was a good attendance of buyers, and the sale. went with a good swing from start to finish, the bulk of the entry finding fresh owners at.-, satisfactory prices. At Inglewood there was only a small percentage of draught horses amongst the offer-; tng, most of .the entries being made up of Mght, plough horses and hackneys,. Good useful farm horses were in demand, and for these good prices were obtained. At Hawera, on the first day,- we catalogued some 170 draughts and spring carters. This nuunber included some very good draught mares and geldings. In fact, it was the best selection of 'heavy horses which has come under the hammer for some time. Buyers were present from all parts of the Taranaki province, as well as from Auckland and the Manawatu districts. Bidding was spirited for good, sound young active draughts and spring carters, and most of the entry coming under this heading changed hands at prices satisfactory to the vendors. On the second day, about 100 light spring: carters, hackneys, harness horses and ponies came under the hammer. Several well-bred hacks brought from £lO to £l5, but there was little demand for ordinary sorts. Ponies were in good demand, and were readily sold at from £6 to £l2. ‘ Quotations (being prices realised at above sales): Heavy draught geldings £45 to £53; good young clifty draught mares and geldings, £3B to £45; draught mares and geldings, £2O to £33; good young active plough horses and spring carters, £25 to £34; ordinary spring carters, £lB to £24; best harness horses to £l4; ponies, £G to £l2. WAIKATO MARKET The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., report :—At Hamilton on Tuesday we had a small yarding of sheep, but heavy supplies of cattle and pigs. Fat steers were plentiful, and sold somewhat under last week's values. The best made from £6 10s to ££7 15s, lighter weights £5 5s to £6 ss. Fat Cows, which were in smaller numbers than usual, were also easier, heavy sorts making from £4 10s to £5 12s 6d. Store rows were in fair demand, best realising from 35s to £2 ss. Grown steers (stores) were also yarded in fair numbers, bis* were for the greater part passed in. Some business was transacted later. The best made from £3 15s to £4 2s 6d. No young steers were penned. Yearling Shorthorn heifers drew fair competition, mak'ng frnm £2 15s to £3 3s. smaller sorta from £2. Sheep were again in small supply and sold under good competition. Best wethers made from 29s -to 32s 3d, others from 225. a pen of well-finished hoggets 275. forward hoggets 17s 9d. Best dairy cows and heifers at profit made £8 10s to £ll, good sorts £6 to £B. backward and Inferior £2 to £5 Three hundred and forty pigs were penned, comprising 120 fat pigs, the balance being stores and weaners. Medium to heavy baconers sold well up to late rates at the beginning, hut eased slightly toward the end of the sale. Well-finished porkers were keenly sought after and maintained their value throughout. Stores and weaners were in excess of the demand, consequently prices declined considerably, medium to heavy baconers making £2 5s to £3 7s. good porkers to light bnconers £2 5s to £2 15s, small to medium porkers 34s to £2 2s. unfinished 25s to 325. slips 17s to 245. small and inferior 10s to 15s, weaners Ils to 18s, others 6s 6d to 9s. BUTTER AND CHEESE. Messrs. Collett and Co.. Ltd., are in receipt of the following cahle report from their British principals: Creamery butter. 208 s to 210 s; white cheese, 88s to 90s; colored cheese, 82s to 84s.
