WRONG MAN GETS CHEQUE.
UNUSUAL CASE OF THEFT. A case of theft committed under somewhat unusual circumstances was brought before the Hamilton Police Court last week, when a Maori, Walter Samuels, aged 38 years, a Public Works employee at Horahora, pleaded guilty to stealing £22 19s 2d. the property of the Kuiranga Meat Company. The company had received, some stock from Mr. A. M. Samuels, of Horahora, but in making out the cheque for £22 19s 2d a mistake occurred, the payee •being given as H. W. Samuels. Accused, from hie own statement, took delivery of the letter containing the cheque from the Horahora post office. He knew that the cheque was not intended for him, but he did not make any inquiries ae to the rightful owner of it. Accused explained the reason of his sudden wealth to his mates by stating that he had had a win in a sweep. Samuels was committed for sentence.
