SOCIETY THIEVES.

BIG .JEWEL ROBBERIES. CLEVER GANG AT WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—-Copyright. London, August 31. v The Evening News says in connection with recent jewellery robberies that the police possess evidence of <a vast organisation employing brains, wealth, beauty and culture to achieve its objects. Spies track the victims, accomplices obtain engagements with jewel dealers and merchants in order to keep their principals informed, and men renting country houses and owning expensive motor cars participate. The claims arising out of the robberies are so numerous that underwriters have been compelled to increase the insurance rates. Tn connection with the robbery of an American woman’s jewels, there have b£en several similar robberies, though on a smaller scale, recently, proving that an exceptionally clever group of British and Continental thieves is. at work, controlled by a master mind. Considerable sums are expended in carefully shadowing people with valuables. These clever ones haunt society functions. It is believed the robbery of the American woman was committed at Calais. The authorities are aware of the existence of a clever gang with headquarters at Deauville, which at present is crowded with fashionable people of all nations, where the thieves, who are most cultured and of good personal appearance, move in the best society.
