CHEAPER BUILDING.
A WELLINGTON OPINION. The cost of building is coming down, according to Mr. Arthur Seed, secretary of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Asfbciation. He was quite clear in his statement that the cost of building was on the down grade, instancing the case where a contract had been let in Wellington for a well-finished five-roomed modern dwelling for £842, whereas it would have cost a year ago from £l2OO to £l4OO to build. He quoted instances furnished by Auckland, Palmerston North, Wanganui, and New Plymouth, of material reductions in the cost of house buildings as compared with the prices ruling 12 months ago.
Mr. Seed said he considered that every possible opportunity should be taken to encourage house-building, for there was no other commercial activity which created such a continuous chain of employment, “besides relieving the hard-put-to and crowded tenants in the towns and cities.”
