At Marion, Illinois, a grand jury returned the first indictment in connection with the Herrin massacre, charging a Marion citizen with firing the shot which killed Superintendent McDowell, of the Southern Illinois coal mine. A warrant wim immediately issued for his arrest. The indictment, after only three days’ investigation, came “as a distinct surprise, since doubt had been expressed whether anything effective would result from the sittings.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
