UNEMPLOYED IN WELLINGTON. HELP FROM GOVERNMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation representing about thred hundred men waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works to-day. The deputation was introduced by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., who stated the registrations of unemployed now num- 1 bered 1242. He stated he realised the problem of married men was very difficult, as many of them had homes in i Wellington and could not afford to keep / two homes going on 12s a day. A num- f ber of other speakers showed hardships < being undergone owing to unemployment. Mr. Massey, replying, said the difficult ty appeared to arise from the fact that many men who were employers a few months ago, especially in. the country, were now unable, owing to the fall in prices, to keep labor at work. The money spent by the Government this year on public works went into £6,000,000. Some of that was spent on material, but for labor alone he had found £250,000. Now that waa all gone., and he was prepared to find another £lOO,OOO. They would not stop or put men off while the need continued. There were 6700 men on public works' in New Zealand. Mr. Massey added that if any men were willing to go to the ocuntry he would find work for them. Mr. Coates said he thought he could | place sixty to seventy men immediately, The Ministers agreed to do anything they could to get the corporation to have any local work placed on an organised basis. The same deputation will wait on tn< City Council to-night.
