DISTRICT NEWS.

NORFOLK ROAD. SCHOOL FANCY DRESS BALL. This function took place on Friday last, and was, as usual, very successful. The schoolroom was decorated with colored streamers, Chinese lanterns, manuka ferns, and red camellias. Here and there were bags of confetti, which, at the end of the evening caused much unerrlment when their contents were emptied out over the dancers. The following contributed music: Miss M. Wilson, Mrs. Wagstaff, Miss N. Wilson, Mrs. Burgess and Miss E. Dombroski (piano), Messrs. Morghn and J. Wilson (cornets), and S. and K. Wilson (violins). Mr. Wagstaff acted as M.C. for the children’s half, and Mr. ,T. Duschenski for the adults, whilst the school committee as a bodj’ worked manfully at odd jobs. Supper for the children was. served in the shelter shed in two instalments, the juniors at half-past nine, and the seniors at ten. Here the ladles of the district had a very busy time, which, as tn? adults had to be fed at eleven, was kept up for most of the evening.

In regard to the costumes, it is safe to say that they were better and more effective than in any of our previous school balls, and the saime remark applies to the adults’ costumes. Also the children’s dancing showed much improvement, the maxina (danced by the senior girls) in particular being much applauded. Fancy marches by seniors and little tots were much appreciated. These were accompanied by the singing of suitable marching songs. Conspicuous among the costumes of the adu.ts was that of Mr. Taylor as "Uncle Ned,” whicn was quite a finished production, and was well carried out by the wearer, who kept the youngsters in peals of laughter. Mr. Taylor also further enlivened the proceedings by contributing recitations and some capital selections on the mandoline. A ballot for the best adult costumes resulted as follows: Gentlemen: Mr. Taylor (Uncle Ned) 1. Mr. Officer (Arab) 2. Ladies: Miss Harrison (Indian Maid) 1. Miss Winnie Thomas (Gipsy Girl) 2. Prizes (donated by Mr. Mat. Dodunski) were presented to the first lady and gentleman by Mr. Simmons (chairman). The takings, which are to be donated towards a shelter shed for the girls, amounted to £l6 10s 6d, which should leave a profit of about £ This includes a donation of 5s from Mr. and Mrs. D. Wright.
